Validation of SeaWinds on QuikSCAT Cell Location

چکیده
Increased interest in high resolution ocean wind measurements, as well as excellent past performance, has led to the development of enhanced resolution applications of SeaWinds on QuikSCAT scatterometer data. An essential requirement of this development is the validation of the cell location accuracy the latitude and longitude of each measurement. This paper discusses two methods of validating measurement location accuracy. One method entails analysis of normalized backscatter coefficients over specific land / ocean boundaries. This method has proven accurate for nominal resolution; it is refined for increasing resolution. Another technique employs the QuikSCAT Calibration Ground Station (CGS). Telemetryreported cell location is compared to the known location of the CGS. Calibration of measurement location using these techniques reveals the limits of SeaWinds pointing accuracy and precision.

Validation of QuikSCAT Radiometer Rain Rates using the TRMM Microwave Radiometer
The primary mission of the SeaWinds scatterometer on the QuikSCAT satellite is to infer surface wind vector from ocean backscatter measurements. Occasionally the backscatter measurements are contaminated by the presence of rain; therefore a reliable method of identifying rain is needed. Fortunately, the SeaWinds scatterometer simultaneously obtains active (scattering) and passive (emission) mea...
متن کاملSeaWinds on QuikSCAT Calibration Using a Calibration Ground Station
AbstmctIn order to achieve highly accurate calibration of the SeaWinds scatterometer, a calibration ground station (CGS) was constructed by Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) at White Sands, New Mexico, in association with the QuikSCAT mission. This receive-only system precisely measures the time, frequency, and power of the SeaWinds transmit signal as it passes overhead. From the CGS data, key instrumen...
متن کاملAn advanced ambiguity selection algorithm for SeaWinds
SeaWinds on QuikSCAT, a spaceborne Ku-band scatterometer, estimates ocean winds via the relationship between the normalized radar backscatter and the vector wind. Scatterometer wind retrieval generates several possible wind vector solutions or ambiguities at each resolution cell, requiring a separate ambiguity selection step to give a unique solution. In processing SeaWinds on QuikSCAT data, th...
متن کاملHigh Resolution Wind Retrieval from SeaWinds
SeaWinds is a Ku-band pencil-beam scatterometer launched in 1999 on the QuikSCAT mission. It is designed to make nominally 25 km resolution observations of vector winds over the ocean. However, by taking advantage of resolution enhancement and its dense sampling characteristics, the wind can be retrieved at much higher resolution, albeit with greater noise. Winds with resolutions as fine as 2.5...
